How to Make a Classic Soggy Dollar Painkiller

Soggy Dollar Painkiller Recipe

You don’t have to swim ashore on Jost Van Dyke to sip this classic Caribbean cocktail! Okay, okay. Even with the perfect recipe and the right ingredients, it won’t be as good if you’re sitting on the couch at home. What can we say, there’s just something about Soggy Dollar Bar that makes the Painkiller so special.

While we can’t transport you to the BVI bar that makes this drink so extraordinary, we can give you the next best thing. Take a look at the locals-only original recipe and cocktail kit for the Caribbean’s favorite craft drink.

Simple Steps to Your New Favorite Summer Cocktail — Soggy Dollar Painkiller Recipe

If you can’t visit the notorious beachside bar, a gourmet cocktail kit is the answer. Locally-sourced island ingredients and chef-created recipes make these cocktails as close to the real thing as you can get.

2 to 4 Ounces Pusser’s Rum (Any dark rum will work, but this is what the islanders use.)

4 Ounces Fresh Pineapple Juice

1 Ounce Fresh Squeeze Orange Juice

1 Ounce Cream of Coconut

Grated Fresh Nutmeg (Don’t cut corners and use the standard store-bought stuff.)

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the first four ingredients. Shake vigorously. Pour into cocktail glasses (or pay homage to Soggy Dollar and use plastic cups).

This is the most important part — use a Microplane to grate the fresh nutmeg on the surface of each cocktail.

Chef-Blended Mixes for Famous Tropical Cocktails

Searching for authentic, organic island ingredients at your local grocery store is certainly an option. We hate to break it to ‘ya, but you’ll end up spending way too much money for sub-par ingredients. Queue the STOCKED chef-blended cocktail mix.

Fresh local nutmeg is the crown jewel of a traditional Painkiller. The reason this cocktail tastes so good in the islands is because the ingredients can only be sourced here. STOCKED cocktail mixes include every local ingredient you need to bring the Painkiller to life from the comfort of your own kitchen.

Check out our other mixes for world famous cocktails. Choose from Rum Punch, Pina Colada, Bloody Mary and Mimosa with a selection of fresh island fruit juices. Place an order and you’ll have a fresh, locally-sourced cocktail kit in no time.

A huge thank you to Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke for sharing its secrets. The islands wouldn’t be famous without you!

The Right Way to Eat a Pineapple

Spoiler alert — there’s not just one way! Videos of clever techniques to peel a pineapple have consumed Twitter and Facebook the past few weeks. Cool? Yes. Practical? We’re here to test a few different methods and give you our unbiased opinion.

For the chefs at STOCKED, simplicity is the name of the game. We love to transform fresh, organic ingredients into gourmet meals. Contrary to popular opinion, five-star dishes don’t always require a confusing recipe or laundry list of ingredients. That’s where simple prep techniques come in.

Why are Caribbean Bananas so Small?

Caribbean Bananas

The size of your banana says a whole lot. Just to clarify, we’re talking about the difference between the fruit found on the mainland versus the Caribbean Banana we eat in the islands. There’s a good chance what you see in the produce section at your local supermarket is 100-percent manmade. We’re all about manmade here in the islands, but only when it comes to cocktails and gourmet food!

Go Bananas Over the Little Ones — Here’s Why

“Burro” and “Baby” Bananas grow in tropical locales like the Caribbean. They’re a couple of inches smaller and fatter than what you find in the States. 95-percent of banana exports in the world are Cavendish, which is a hybrid banana species created in fancy labs. You know what kind of bananas we use at STOCKED? The short, flavorful ones that grow straight from the earth.

So, why the size difference? Here ya go:

Natural Shapes Don’t Always Match Human Preference

Caribbean bananas obtain all the nutrients and flavor that bananas are supposed to have. Over the years, manmade hybrids have lost their mineral content, which takes away the benefits associated with brain function, bone health and weight loss.

When it comes to simple gourmet dishes like Bananas Foster and fresh fruit crêpes, high-quality organic ingredients make all the difference. STOCKED sources local produce, like Baby Bananas, for every dish we prepare.

Sourced From Small Farms that Care

STOCKED partners with producers around the Caribbean that believe Mother Nature knows best. We take farm-to-table to heart because we care about our clients. From a simple fruit salad to gourmet delicacies, the food you eat from a STOCKED delivery contains the freshest and most natural ingredients we can get our hands on.

Local farmers produce crops of bananas two-to-five inches long. We buy bananas from these local partners and use the fruit at each stage of maturity. We boil them when they’re bright green and serve them raw when fully mature. Compared to Cavendish Bananas found nearly everywhere else in the world, Caribbean Bananas pack robust flavors no matter their ripeness.

Eat Local, No Matter Your Destination

Caribbean Bananas are one of many all-natural foods we use to create appetizers, entrees and desserts. Locals and travelers alike will taste the difference of a responsibly-sourced STOCKED meal. Want to take your experience one step further? Our team of professional chefs delivers straight to your yacht deck. There’s just nothing better than combining gourmet food and island hopping.

Ready to eat like a (pampered) islander? Get your fix of fresh, gourmet food right here on St. Thomas — straight from the STOCKED kitchen.

How to Make The Perfect Cheeseburger in Paradise

Cheeseburger in paradise

Is it even possible to own a biz in the islands without mentioning Jimmy Buffett at least once? Clearly not. We’re here with the not-so-secret, totally delicious recipe for the best dang cheeseburger on this side of the Atlantic. Here’s how to make the perfect cheeseburger in paradise that will even make Jimmy himself say, “Good God almighty which way do I steer?”

I Like Mine With…

You know how it goes. The Margaritaville cheeseburger in paradise favorite includes all the staples — lettuce, tomato, cheese and a pickle. But you have to get it juuuust right to understand why this burger earned its own anthem.

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef chuck
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon onion salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon celery salt
  • 6 slices American cheese
  • 3 slices Muenster or Pepperjack cheese
  • 4 sesame seed hamburger buns, toasted with butter
  • 1 red onion, sliced into rings
  • 1 head of iceberg lettuce
  • 2 beefsteak tomatoes, sliced
  • Dill pickle spears
  • Toothpicks
  • Heaven on Earth with an Onion Slice

Shape the ground chuck into seven-ounce patties. Combine all of the different salts (Jimmy clearly isn’t concerned about high blood pressure) and the pepper in a bowl, then spread on both sides of the patties.

Place the patties on a hot grill and cook halfway through to your desired temperature. Flip then finish off with two cheese slices until they melt.

Now it’s time for the hard part! Call the kiddos in from your villa’s pool to help with this step. Pull your fresh delivered produce from the fridge to assemble your burgers. Put the burger on the bottom bun and top with a slice of lettuce, tomato and some onion.

It just won’t taste like paradise if you leave out the pickle and crispy fries! Stick a toothpick through your ginormous burger and serve it alongside salted fries and a pickle spear.

We’ve got the Goods to Bring this Burger to Life

Let’s face it, it’s really tough (and crazy expensive) to find fresh groceries on St Thomas and St John. You’ll end up wasting hours and hundreds at the grocery store on just one or two meals. You’re in luck because STOCKED has gourmet delivery down to a T.

Whether you crave a bottle of local Cruzan rum or the precise seasonings and ingredients for a killer burger, we’ve got ‘ya covered. Hey, we even have gourmet cocktail kits to help wash it all down. Bloody Mary, anyone?

Welcome to the Land of Enormous Caribbean Avocados

Caribbean Avocadoes

Mother Natural really knew what she was doing with these green giants. Every islander’s favorite keto-friendly, low maintenance snack is a Caribbean avocado. Unlike it’s tinier, more expensive counterpart (sorry Haas avos, we still love you), the ginormous avocados you find in the Virgin Islands are just plain better.

Between its perfectly creamy texture and its larger-than-life size, we’d be crazy not to rave about our favorite breakfast, snack, spread, appetizer…you get the point. The STOCKED gourmet chefs have a few favorites ways to serve avocado in the Caribbean.

Our Tropical Twist on Traditional Guacamole

Don’t get us wrong, the classic cantina favorite still has a special place in our hearts. It’s hard to live in paradise and not get the urge to throw a ‘lil something more in the mix. Take a look at the STOCKED chef’s take on everyone’s favorite app.

2 medium Caribbean avocados

2 cups pineapple, diced

2 jalapenos, minced and seeded

1 Roma tomato, diced with pulp discarded

A handful of fresh cilantro, chopped

Fresh lime juice

3 cloves of minced garlic

Sea salt

Ground pepper

Round out your avo experience with housemade tortilla chips and a gourmet Painkiller cocktail kit. Trust us, this is a match made in Caribbean heaven.

Indulge in On-trend Avocado Toast

Don’t just do it for the ‘gram, do it for your health and flavor palate. Avocado toast comes in a million different forms, but we keep it simple around these parts. It starts with freshly baked bread straight from the STOCKED kitchen. Not too thin and not too thick, but juuust right.

We source local avocados, red onion and tomato at their peak ripeness. It’s important to sample every single ingredient on its own before creating a recipe, especially when it comes to fresh produce.

1 Caribbean avocado (equals about two Haas avocados)

½ red onion, diced

2 Roma tomatoes, diced with pulp discarded

A handful of crumbled Feta cheese

A squeeze of fresh lemon

Sea salt

Ground pepper

Delicately mash the avocado flesh and lemon juice with a pestle and mortar. Use a spoon to combine the onion, tomato, salt and pepper. Finally, mix in the fresh Feta.

Ginormous Avocados give Healthy Eating a Whole New Meaning

Calling all vegans, vegetarians and keto enthusiasts! Caribbean avocados simply check all the boxes. Eat them plain like a local or mix them up with one of our go-to recipes. However you do it, avocados play a key part in weight loss, lowering cholesterol levels and providing essential nutrients.

When you come to St Thomas or St John, get your avocado fix without having to brave the aisles of the grocery store. Work with the STOCKED gourmet island experts to curate your perfect Caribbean meal plan.

Since We Love Caribbean Rum, Let’s Talk about Caribbean Rum Cake

Caribbean Rum Cake

Some people like to drink their calories while others want to plain ‘ol eat them. We prefer to do both! We hate to break it to you, but a trip to the Caribbean doesn’t bode well with counting calories. After a few Painkiller cocktails and a slice of Caribbean rum cake, that diet of yours will be a thing of the past.

The STOCKED crew partners with My Brother’s Workshop, a nonprofit for at-risk youth in the Virgin Islands, to bring gourmet rum cakes to travelers like you. You need to actually be in the islands to taste this cake, but since a slice is in our belly right now…

Get Your Dessert Fix and Give Back to the Local Community

Creamy butter, local rum and sweet cane sugar work together to bring this island staple to the plates of St Thomas and St John visitors. The kids in the My Brother’s Workshop program experience gourmet chef training to bake the perfect Caribbean bundt (and boy, do they know their way around a kitchen!)

Dark Cruzan rum straight from the Virgin Islands is what makes this cake so flippin’ good. The STOCKED gourmet chefs source local ingredients to create the perfect flavor profile. Between rum created at a nearby distillery to eggs from a local farm, you’re in for a true Caribbean treat.

When you purchase MBW products through your online STOCKED order, a percentage of the profit supports this important mission.

Pair Your Caribbean Rum Cake with a STOCKED Cocktail Kit

After-dinner drinks and boozy brunches are a real thing and we’re totally on board. Enjoy your Caribbean rum cake with a chef-blended cocktail for an even sweeter treat. Pair a slice of moist rum cake with a classic Painkiller for the perfect digestif or start your morning right with a Bloody Mary and a sliver of Caribbean cake.

That’s another great thing about visiting the Virgin Islands — we don’t care when you pour a cocktail and we certainly don’t care how many slices of cake you eat. Some of our neighbors pour their first Caribbean rum cocktail early in the morning, others indulge in a late night slice of cake. Who cares? We’re in paradise!

Have Your Cake and Eat it Too here in the Virgin Islands

Your island adventure shouldn’t be spent in line at the grocery store and it certainly shouldn’t be spent baking a cake. That’s where the STOCKED team comes in. We bring you top-quality ingredients and island-favorite indulgences to make your trip a sweet one.

Caribbean Rum Delivery

Caribbean Rum

Do you wake up every morning and drink a glass of water? Swap the water for rum and you might as well call yourself an islander! Caribbean rum is the lifeblood of good times and bad here on St Thomas and St John. Locals don’t drink to get drunk, though. (Ok, most locals don’t.)

Our rum is so good and inexpensive here in the Virgin Islands that we just can’t help ourselves. When it’s cheaper than milk and sourced on local soil, it’d be foolish not to embrace our natural resources.

Rum is an Island Artform (and Dare We Say Healthier than an Apple?)

Oh yeah, we went there. Traditional, pure Caribbean rum boasts serious health benefits. One tour of a rum factory here in the islands and you’ll understand why the distilling processes are so special. Islanders make rum in these small factories with fresh sugar cane or molasses and oak barrels used for generations.

Great rum is smooth, full-flavored and delicious. It doesn’t just taste dang good, though. Rum consumed responsibly can increase good cholesterol, prevent heart attacks, decrease muscle pain and make your bones stronger. Seriously, we could go on and on about the impressive health benefits.

One of our favorite perks of a shot or two of rum is that it fights the common cold. Next time you feel a little under the weather, check out the STOCKED pre-mixed cocktail kits. A glass of rum a day keeps the doctor away… or something like that.

Caribbean Rum is Good for Much More than Cocktails

If you haven’t tried a real Tortuga Rum Cake, you haven’t really lived. The STOCKED team of gourmet chefs use St Thomas and St John rum in many of our fresh sauces, desserts and entrees. Gourmet food delivery on St Thomas and St John is the perfect way to experience the Caribbean. If you’re going to be in the islands, make the most of your trip with locally sourced and locally prepared foods.

We’re all about drinking our calories, too. Dark and light rum are staple ingredients in island cocktails like Rum Punch and the world famous Painkiller. Want to know our favorite way to drink Caribbean rum? Straight up with a squeeze of lime, just how Hemingway liked it.

Shop Local, Eat Local, Sip Local

The best way to vacation in the islands is to fully immerse yourself in the people and culture. Whether you charter a yacht for the week or stay in a luxe villa, gourmet food delivery is the way to go.
